The Applications of Carbon based Fluorescent Materials in Bioanalysis, Bioimaging and Phototherapy

Dr. Minhuan Lan was graduated from UCAS at 2013, and now as a SRA in CityU-COSDAF. His research is focused on developing fluorescent materials and investigating their applications in bioanalysis and biomedicine. He has achieved excellent research results and published papers in Nat. Commun., JACS and Adv. Mater.
In this seminar, we will introduce some carbon based fluorescent materials, including carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), organic nanoparticles (ONPs) and organic/inorganic hybrid nanomaterials, and investigate their applications in biomedicine and biosensing.
1. We designed and synthesized a series of fluorescent molecules which contain 3-phenyl-subsituted polythiophene as the fluorescent chromophore and special molecular recognizing groups in the conjugated backbone as the receptor. These probes were successfully applied in the detection of several important biological molecules, such as lipopolysaccharide, lysophosphatidic acid and antibiotics.
2. By using different carbon sources, we synthesized CNPs with tunable fluorescence from blue to near infrared emission. We explored the effects of doping on the photophysical and photochemical properties of CNPs, including their capability in generating ROS and/or photothermal effect, and evaluated their performance in biosensing, bioimaging, phototherapy through in vitro and in vivo experiments.
