College Introduction     The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) has been established at Shenzhen University to provide both undergraduate and postgraduate education, focusing on interdisciplinary teaching and research. As a special platform at Shenzhen University, IAS seeks to 1. build a team consisting of experienced professors with international vision and young teachers with great potential; 2. adopt best-practice management methods used by overseas research universities to foster collaborations with world-class universities in Hong Kong and abroad; 3. create an academic atmosphere and training environment to meet with the international standards with the overall goal of attaining excellence in teaching, research and management. IAS fosters the training of innovative talents, cutting-edge scientific research and hi-tech development in the cross fields of marine resources and environment, functional materials, biotechnology, and financial technology. The research outcomes and newly-trained talents will promote the hi-tech industries in Shenzhen, particularly emerging industries of strategic importance such as biology, Internet, new energy sources, new materials and next-generation information and communication technology and facilitate the transformation and growth of Shenzhen’s economy. The Innovation Class in Science and Engineering (ICSE) of IAS has enrolled about 60 students each session during 2014-2018. The initial enrollment scale of graduate students is 10 to 30 students per year, and 30-60 students per year for the future, reaching 60-120 postgraduate students. The enrollment scale for doctoral students is 10-30 per year in the initial period, and the enrollment scale is 30 -60 students per year, reaching 120-240 doctoral students at school. As of March 2018, IAS has over 20 full-time professors and 34 post-doctoral fellows. Full-time faculty members are employed on the basis of tenured or tenure-tracked positions. All professors, associate professors and assistant professors should be principle investigators of their own research groups, and will be employed, evaluated and promoted in line with domestic and foreign peer evaluation system. In research evaluation, quality of contribution to knowledge will be emphasized over simply the quantity of publications. All professors have studied abroad and met the qualifications of Shenzhen's high-level talents (Peacock Project) and the faculty include international academicians, experts of “National thousands of plans” Program (including Thousands Young Talents Plan), scholars of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, fellows of International Professional Society. They have got 77 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation grants, the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province grants, the Science and Technology Projects of Shenzhen and the High-Caliber Personnel from the Peacock Project and published nearly 100 high-level international academic papers. Meanwhile, they have been invited to domestic and foreign academic conferences many times. About Us


On the leading construction, the dean responsible system is adapted based on the guidance of the leading of IAS, and the dean of IAS is directly responsible to the president of Shenzhen University. The leading group of the Institute is composed of the president of Shenzhen University, the dean of IAS, the advisor of IAS, the vice president of the undergraduate education, the vice president of the graduate and the scientific research, the director of the Educational Administration Department, the dean of the Graduate School, the director of the Office of Academic Planning and Development.

IAS sets up four committees, including the Academic Committee, the Advisory Committee, the Administrative Committee and the Educational Committee. The Institute is in charge of professors and subject leaders are responsible to the dean.

The Academic Committee aims to provide suggestions for the strategic development, research directions, training plans, academic standards, and cooperation with the industry in teaching and research. The valuable opinions of the committee contribute to the development of IAS in teaching and scientific research, as well as strengthening links with domestic industries and universities, research institutes both at home and abroad.

The Advisory Committee assists the Institute in recruiting full-time faculty (TTF), providing evaluation on the research capabilities and development potential of applicants; guides the establishment of the research direction of the Institute, the application of research projects, and the construction and development of disciplines; participates the assessment of the tenure system for TTF, and also proposes directional suggestions for the development of IAS in teaching and scientific research.

The Administrative Committee is the highest academic and administrative organization at IAS, and is responsible for formulating management systems such as teaching, scientific research, personnel and finance. The Committee is composed of the dean and the consultant of IAS, subject leaders and the representatives of full-time faculty, and some of its powers and responsibilities can be delegated to its professional committees. In order to guarantee the normal work of the financial, personnel, education, and research work of IAS, a committee composed of representatives of faculty and staff should be set up under the Committee and exercise the functions and powers assigned by the Committee.

The Educational Committee is the highest academic organization at IAS and focuses on formulating and reviewing educational policies, and the chairman should be held by the dean or executive director of IAS. The powers and responsibilities of the committee will be clearly specified in the regulations of the Institute, and some of them can be delegated to its professional committees.
