Novel Organic Ionic Plastic Crystal Electrolyte Materials for Energy Applications

About the Speaker

Dr. Zhu received PhD in Polymer Chemistry and Physics from ICCAS in 2010. Before joining Deakin (Australia) in 2012, he worked in Max-Planck Institute(Germany) and Eindhoven University (Netherlands). His current research focuses on novel electrolyte materials for energy applications. He has published 56 papers and delivered over 20 presentations.


Talk Information

Organic Ionic Plastic Crystal (OIPC) is a solid-state cousin of ionic liquids family with unique plastic crystal phases which provides an optimal balance between mechanical flexibility and ionic conductivity.Since the past decade or so, OIPCs have been attracting increasing attention as alternatives to the traditional organic-solvent based electrolytes for electrochemical devices including lithium batteries, fuel cells, and actuators etc.
In this talk, I will summarize and highlight the key findings, opportunities and challenges in the field of OIPC based electrolytes for energy applications. My talk includes three main chapters: In the first chapter I will present our most recent progresseson the new protic OIPCs for fuel cell and redox flow battery applications. Next I will move to our research work in the polymeric ionic liquids materials aiming at intermediate temperature fuel cell applications. Finally, I will briefly introduce the designing and characterisation of OIPCs for lithium battery electrolytes.
