About the Speaker

I obtained M.Sc. in theoretical chemistry at Fudan University. After obtaining Ph.D. at Wayne State University, I worked as Postdoc at TAMU for one year and ORNL for two years. Since 2014, I have been working in HIT as associate professor. My expertise is Materials Simulation and Computational Chemistry.


Talk Introduction

Freestanding 2D sheets of group II-VI materials such as ZnS and ZnSe are beginning to step into the limelight of energy materials. For example, a four-atom-thick sheet of ZnSe fabricated in recent experiment shows outstanding performance in photoelectrochemical solar water splitting. Inspired by the recent discovery, we studied a variety of zinc chalcogenide 2D layered materials by theory, including a novel three-atomic-thick sheet of ZnSe, which will be discussed in detail in this talk. The new tetragonal ZnSe 2D sheet shows outstanding electrical and optical properties, making it suitable for potential optoelectronic applications and even Li-ion battery. We also find that t-ZnS/ZnSe BL has a strong optical absorption in the solar spectrum, becoming potentially good candidates for solar energy harvesting. In addition, t-ZnS/ZnSe BL demonstrates a good electron-hole separation by allocation of photo-induced electrons and holes in different layers, making it ideal material for photocatalysis.
