Biointellipro: Adding Intelligence into Bioprocessing

Dr. Y. Martin Lo

CEO, Biointellipro LLC

About the Speaker

Dr. Y. Martin Lo, CEO & President of Biointellipro, decided to step away from his 20 years as a faculty at the University of Maryland in 2014 to focus on helping developing countries. He has organized interdisciplinary teams to tackle food safety and ecological issues in different countries, and was invited to speak on “Healthy Cities” at the United Nations headquarter in NYC during December 2017. A food bioprocess engineer by training at the Ohio State University, Dr. Lo’s expertise ranges from intervention for microbial control to recovery of renewable ingredients and assessment of nano-safety. Dr. Lo received the Outstanding Food Safety Research Award from UN Human Health Organization in 2017, and the Presidential Volunteer Service Silver Medals from Presidents Obama and Trump in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He is a Fellow of the World Food Preservation Center, a FDA-recognized Process Authority, the Ambassador of the International Union of Food Science and Technology, and the founding Editor-in-Chief for Food Science & Nutrition.

Talk Information

The accomplishments and challenges in bioprocessing of food and agriculture materials are discussed as the backbone of the talk, with emphasis on the advancements leading to sustainable biological systems. To date, food safety is becoming an increasingly important and complex societal issue internationally. Consumers throughout the world struggle to keep pace with a variety of ever-changing and diversified food safety concerns. A number of recent foodborne disease outbreaks in the United States and around the world have made the public keenly aware that our food supply is vulnerable; there is also growing recognition that we are ill equipped to handle the emerging threats against our food supplies. Modern agriculture aiming at maximizing yields has drastically exhausted the ecological system underneath the farmland, as evidenced by increasing applications of agrochemicals throughout the world. Professionals involved with different aspects of scientific research are urged to remain humble when it comes to gathering meaningful data that might impact policy making. It is clear that the current academic setting has inherent blindness that leads to considerable discrepancies towards such realizations; however, precious opportunities exist when coordinated efforts can be strategized together to unwind the complicated issues.
