2020-01-08

Prof. Lianzhou Jiang, the Dean of Food Science College of Northeast Agricultural University, was invited to visit the Institute for Advanced Study and delivered a lecture by Dr. Tian Peng Chen from the IAS. The lecture was hosted by Dean Feng Chen from IAS and many teachers and students came to listen to the class.

Prof. Lianzhou Jiang delivered a report which entitled The Past, Present, and Future of Plant-based Meat in the meeting room 103 of Huiyuan Building at 10:00 a.m.on January 8, 2020. As we all know, artificial meats are very hot in 2019. Plant-based artificial meat is one of the artificial meats, which is made using plant proteins as the main content, supplemented with respective auxiliary ingredients, and treated through selected processing to yield animal tissue-like texture and taste. In the report, Prof. Jiang first explained the historical development process and product development process of plant-based artificial meat humorously, thus making people have a deep understanding of how plant-based artificial meat developed in the past.

Later, he began to talk about the industrial status and research status of the plant-based artificial meat. He said, in the 1960s, Japan and the United States began to do research and develop the industrial production line of vegetable protein, including protein powder, concentrated protein, isolated protein, and organized protein. China did not have the industrial production line of vegetable protein until the 1980s, and China's plant protein industry gradually developed during the following 40 years. The soybean research team of Northeast Agricultural University made a soybean tissue protein production line and developed relevant products during the twelfth five-year plan period.

At last, he also forecasted the future. Currently, the market of plant-based meat over the world has grown rapidly, and a large number of vegetarian meat industries have emerged. Enterprises have increased their investments and new products have emerged continually. The market has expanded a lot and it is said that the market size of plant-based meat over the world will reach $12 billion and may reach $28 billion in 2025. Maybe in the future, the plant-based artificial meat will become our daily food.
