The 2019 teacher-student exchange meeting of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Shenzhen University (SZU) was held at L1-201, Zhili Building, Canghai Campus at 16:00 on December 13th. Mr. Jifeng Dai, the head of the united front department of the organization department at SZU, Professor Feng Chen, the dean of the IAS, Dr. Yang Wei, the deputy dean of the IAS, many full-time teachers from the college, and 60 freshmen participated in the exchange meeting and conducted a face-to-face talk in depth.
This exchange meeting was hosted by Professor Feng Chen, who introduced the aim of holding this activity and showed the warmest welcome to the present guests, teachers and students at the beginning.
Then Mr.Jifeng Dai, the head of the united front department of the organization department at SZU, delivered an important speech. According to the rules of SZU, each leader of the University, department and college should keep contact with a class and Mr. Dai is in charge of contracting with the 2019 students from the IAS. He encouraged students to study diligently and form a good habit of early to bed and early to rise. He said the students should plan for the future in advance and spare no effort to make a contribution to society, the world and human beings’ progress. At last, he said he would continue to care and support the IAS students as before and wished the students a bright future.
Later, Dr. Yang Wei, the deputy dean of the IAS, introduced the institute’s freshman tutor and headteacher system, and the special classes called Expanding Reading and Discussion and Humanities, Social Sciences and Art Lectures. She said six 2019 freshman tutors including Yang Wei, Xiuting Li, Xiaoguang Li, Yongxiang Gao, Ke Pan, Yizhou Jiang would help freshmen adapt to college life and provide careers guidance. They will also guide the freshmen to carry out special practice activities. In addition, she also introduced Prof. Hai Xiong, the headteacher of class 2019, who would be responsible for the freshman’s ideology, learning, daily behavior norms, and appraisal work.
In the third part of the exchange meeting, four teachers came from different disciplines introduced all teachers of that discipline and their research directions. Prof. Ke Pan, as the representative of biological science, he introduced the academic background and research fields of all biology teachers humorously and gave students a wonderful course of basic biology in ten minutes.
Prof. Zheng Li, as the representative of chemistry, he introduced all teachers and then told the students that they are supposed to discover their own interests before choosing their research directions and make plans in advance to prepare for the work / further study.
Prof. Scott Edwards, as the representative of physics, he used both Chinese and English to introduce the physics teachers from the IAS and their research fields. Prof. Xiong Wang was the representative teacher of math. He not only introduced the math teachers’ research interests but also taught some mathematical theories and concepts such as the calculus of variations and chaos. Students listened to him very carefully and made notes.
After the teacher’s sharing, Dean Feng Chen made a conclusion. He said the IAS is a young institute which has been recruiting teaching teachers to provide better education for the students continuously. There are seven national-level experts at present and four full-time teachers will join the IAS within the next three or four months. In the future, the IAS will move into a new building equipped with first-class facilities to provide a better teaching and research environment for students and teachers. In the end, Dean Chen wished students to enjoy their best time in the IAS.
The exchange meeting was ended with the group discussion. The institute prepared some snacks and drinks for students and the teachers joined the group talking and answered their questions patiently.
