Under the background of global warming and the carbon neutrality, CO2 capture and conversion have been always one of the most concerned topics in the last decade. Utilization of green electricity produced by renewable energy (e.g., solar and wind), electroreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels is considered as a feasible and promising method, thus has attracted tremendous attention. Recently, Prof. Wei Zhao group in Institute for Advanced Study published a review paper about electroreduction of CO2 to ethylene titled of “A disquisition on CO2 electroreduction to C2H4: An engineering and design perspective looking beyond novel choosy catalyst materials” on the journal of Coordination Chemistry Reviews (impact factor: 24.8, Coord. Chem. Rev., 2023, 485, 215099). Prof. Wei Zhao is the sole corresponding author of this paper and Dr. Saira Ajmal is the first author.

The disquisition demonstrates a unified discussion on recent progress in the area of CO2 reduction to C2H4. The role of a class of promising advanced electrocatalysts, electrolytes and the design of electrolyzer in the electrochemical reduction method is thoroughly reviewed. The review also highlights the current developments in photocatalytic CO2 reduction to C2H4. Lastly, this review is concluded by deliberating the current challenges that are encountered during the production of C2H4 from CO2 electrochemical reduction with an objective of revolutionary futuristic developments. This article will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers on CO2 electrochemical reduction to C2H4 production.
