Dr. Nie Huarong, Ph.D.
University of Washington, Seattle

About the speaker

Dr. Huarong Nie received her B.S. and M.S. degree both from Lanzhou University, and a Ph.D. degree from Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She has two postdoc research experiences at the Univeristy of Masschusetts, Amherst and the University of Washington, Seattle, respectively.

Talk Introduction

Nanomaterials have attracted significant interest for potential applications in biomaterials, energy storage and other areas due to their unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties as well as their facile surface chemistry and appropriate size scale. One area of my research has focused on fabrication of natural biopolymer nanofibers via electrospinning for biomedical applications. In contrast to synthetic polymers, natural biopolymer have more excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, better hydrophilicity, less-immune reaction, and promote enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation. However, the electrospinning of most natural biopolymers is not as easy as synthetic polymers. In this talk, I will present my research on how to dissolve this problem and understand the main obstacles behind this phenomenon to extend the application of polymer nanofibers.
