Brain Fatty Acid Metabolism Mediates Leptin’s Central Effect of Reducing Body Weight

Dr. Su GAO

Project Scientist, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California United States

About the Speaker

Dr. Gao graduated from Peking University Health Sciences Center (former Beijing Medical University) with a medical degree. He conducted his Ph.D. thesis research at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the United States. Currently he is a Project Scientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at Los Angeles, California.

Talk Information

In this seminar, I will talk about the role of fatty acid metabolism in the central nervous system underlying the regulation of energy balance. Brain fatty acid metabolism has recently been shown to mediate aspect of the central control of feeding behavior and body weight homeostasis. In this regard, malonyl-CoA, an intermediate in fatty acid biosynthetic pathway, has emerged as a key player. I will focus on the action of malonyl-CoA in the hypothalamus, a critical brain site in mediating the control of appetite and energy homeostasis. In particular, I will delineate the role of malonyl-CoA in the hypothalamus in mediating the intracellular signaling pathways underlying leptin’s effect of suppressing appetite and reducing body weight. I will further present data highlighting the potential downstream targets of malonyl-CoA in leptin’s hypothalamic intracellular signaling pathway. Finally, I will discuss future directions aimed at further understanding malonyl-CoA signaling mechanisms in the hypothalamus.
