The Innovation Class in Science and Engineering (ICSE)

1. Objective

The Innovation Class in Science and Engineering (ICSE) of the Institute for Advanced Study represents a new model for generalized higher education and development, with reference to the experiences of top universities both in China and abroad. This class can also be seen as a response to the demand from hi-tech industries in Shenzhen for high-quality and highly innovative graduates in the science and engineering fields, who should possess a solid theoretical background in the basic sciences, sufficient knowledge of interdisciplinary concepts, and a clear grasp of high technology and modern engineering. In addition, students in this program should cultivate an appreciation of art and culture, a pioneering spirit of exploration, and the ability for innovation and entrepreneurship.

2. Cultivation Mode

The Innovation Class in Science and Engineering (ICSE) is characterized by small size, high proficiency, cross-disciplinary focus, strong foundations, research orientation, and internationalization. Details are as follows:

1）Curriculum. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and research, students are given a strong foundation in fundamental science and in the related interdisciplinary fields of functional materials, marine resources and environment, and biotechnology. Across all majors, students from ICSE are required to focus on basic education. After two years, students will be trained in separate majors according to their individual preference.

2）International Exchange. Globally renowned scholars are invited to teach and do research in IAS to create an academic atmosphere and training environment that meets international standards. IAS supports students to participate in international exchanges, and funds overseas summer visits.

3）Tutorship. All full-time academic staff at IAS will serve as freshman supervisors and professional tutors for students from ICSE, offering personalized guidance to students regarding study, research and daily life.

4）Scholarships. All students from ICSE can receive a full-tuition scholarship for their freshman year and apply for the Top Innovation Talent Scholarship and other scholarships of IAS from the second year onwards. 5）Scientific Research. IAS attaches great importance to high-quality scientific research and the spirit of exploration and innovation. All junior students from ICSE will join their advisor’s laboratory research group to carry out a two-year research project to develop scientific research skills and practical ability.

6）Honor courses and Honor degree. IAS will establish a course system by selecting excellent teachers from within or outside the university and building up a core teaching faculty, focusing on providing a good teaching environment for students. The students will be rewarded with an Honor Degree from Shenzhen University after taking enough honor courses.

7）Academic Calendar and Language. IAS has its own independent academic calendar based on those of foreign universities, while making provision for Chinese public holidays. Students from ICSE will be taught in both Chinese and English, subject to the curriculum, the students’ learning ability and teaching effectiveness.

Students from the Innovation Class in Fintech (ICF)

1. Objective

Students from the Innovation Class in Fintech (ICF) will be trained as senior specialized professionals who possess a solid theoretical foundation in economics, finance and computer science, as well as mastery of the theory and practice of international financial technology, business management discipline and related policies and regulations of international financial science and technology. They will be well prepared to take on work at government departments, and in banking, securities and insurance, and technology companies. This major is devoted to cultivating financial science and technology talents with a global vision and a reasonable knowledge structure, meeting the needs of the modern financial market. The degree program is modeled on the undergraduate degree in finance technology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the MBA in Financial Technology curriculum of New York University.

2. Cultivation Mode

1）Curriculum. The Innovation Class in Fintech (ICF) focuses on application and practice, involving multidisciplinary and multi-field training. The curriculum contains core modules that cover the basic sciences, computing, economic management and finance to cultivate students in the use of modern financial management knowledge and computer technology, with the ultimate goal of proficiency in handling practical business in the financial technology industry.
2）Featured Classes. All professional basic courses and core courses are taught from English textbooks with bilingual teaching. The teaching of the main courses is carried out by international teachers and teachers with overseas study experience. In addition, some courses are taught by industry elites and teachers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University.
3）Tutorship. Professional teachers will serve as study supervisors for the students from ICF. In addition, in keeping with the practical characteristics of the major, some elites in this industry will be arranged to serve as industry mentors so that students can consult with them and seek help during their studies.
4）Scholarships. All students from ICF will receive a full-tuition scholarship for their freshman year and apply for the Top Innovation Talent Scholarship and other scholarships of IAS from the second year onwards. 5）Innovation Practice. In order to help students appreciate how professional knowledge is applied in real-life situations, and to cultivate their ability to solve practical problems, IAS hires experienced professionals from famous financial tech enterprises such as WeBank and China Merchants Bank to teach the practical part of practical courses. It also organizes opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning at practical departments, and invites professionals from relevant fields of financial technology to participate in discussions of case studies and simulations.
6）Entrepreneurial Support. Students who oriented towards starting their own companies will attain support from IAS.
7）Honor Courses and Honor Degree. Enrollment Selection

The 2018 freshemen of Shenzhen University are welcomed to to participate in enrollment selection of the 2018 ICSE/ICF.

1) Registration Method
a. Pre-interview: IAS will publish the pre-interview selection requirements on the Shenzhen University Admissions Information Website and the Institute for Advanced Study Website before the candidates fill in their voluntary choice of the college entrance examination. The Institute will decide whether the candidates can participate in the pre-interview according to the specific conditions of the provincial college entrance examinations. The candidates who pass the pre-interview will directly admitted by IAS. Candidates can also consult the Admissions Working Group of IAS for a pre-interview program.
b. Normal Interview: From August 1st to August 30th, 2018, candidates can log in the website of the Institute of Advanced Study (http://ias.szu.edu.cn/apply/index), fill in the ICSE/ICF application form online and submit it.
2) Application Condition
The 2018 freshemen of Shenzhen University.
3) Selection Procedure
In early September 2018, the Institute will determine the list of participants according to the applicant's college entrance examination results and application form, and then conduct a written test and interview. Time of the written test and interview, location and list will be published on the Shenzhen University Admissions Information Website (http://zs.szu.edu.cn/index/) and the Institute for Advanced Study Websit (http://ias.szu.edu.cn).
4) Enrollment Number
ICSE/ICF plans to recruit no more than 60 students.
5) Enrollment Result
The Institute will give the admission notice to the enrolled students, and publish the enrollment selection method, process and results of ICSE/ICF on the Shenzhen University Admissions Information Website and the Institute for Advanced Study Website. Please pay more attention
