Education:

1991, University of California,Los Angeles (UCLA), Postdoctoral Scholar

1990, Michigan Technological University, Organic Chemistry, Ph. D.

1985, Research Institute of Petroleum Process (RIPP), Petroleum Engineering, M. S.

1982, Henan Normal University, Chemistry, B. S.

Working Experience:

For over twenty years, ProfessorNiu had worked in USA as an educator, researcher and innovator in the area of electronic materials, energy materials and reverse osmosis membranes: first at Cornell University and UC Berkeley as a Professor Assistant, then at The Dow Chemical Company(Dow)and General Electric Company(GE)as a Principal Scientist. Since 2014, he has worked in China as a Distinguish Professor in the field of materials science and engineering: first at China University of Petroleum (East China) and now at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Shenzhen University.

Research Interests:

Professor Niu’s research interests are in the area of membrane materials and process, membrane based separation technologies and functional polymeric materials. His currentresearch groupis dedicated to the fundamental and applied research into several membranematerial chemistry areas including 1) design the new interfaces with controlled morphology and functionalities to achieve optimal separation in water-treatment applications; 2) tailor the nano-structured features of materials to achieve the precise control of pore size and pose size distribution in membrane for ion-sieving; 3) model the multicomponent interfaces and nanoporous architecture to radically understand the relationship between membrane structure, fabrication process and its separation performance.
