Areas of special interest

My research mainly focusses on marine viral ecology, including viral diversity, viral life strategy, host-virus interaction, and the ecological and biogeochemical roles of viruses in the ocean. Along with studies on viruses in the photosynthesis related systems, my team also investigated viruses in the extreme environments including deep-sea and deep biosphere. We provided experimental evidence showing the impacts of viruses on the ecological characteristics of marine bacterioplankton and evaluated the contribution of viral infection on host’s diversity, evolution and adaption, at both community and genetic levels. We have also investigated the response of marine viruses to global change such as ocean acidification and warming. Genomics and metagenomics are used in my laboratory to investigate phage and prophage genomes, in which viral evolution and host-phage gene transfer are revealed. Our studies are helpful for a better understanding of virus-mediated ecological and biogeochemical processes in the marine ecosystems. In addition, my laboratory has developed the first viral oceanographic database (gVOD) and established a collection of viral isolates (including viruses infecting autotrophic cyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria) and environmental viral samples collected from all over the world.
