A New Kind of Strong and Tough Hydrogels:Microgel-Reinforced Double-Network Hydrogels

About the speaker

Dr. Hu Jian graduated in chemical engineering and technology from Zhejiang University in 2006, and further obtained his master’s degree in 2008. Dr. Hu Jian received doctor's degree for the study on hydrogels with high strength and toughness from Hokkaido University in 2012. After that, Dr. Hu Jian started the postdoctoral work on the application of advanced SERS technique in electrochemistry in Hokkaido University.

 

Talk Introduction

Hydrogels have aroused considerable interest because of their wide applications in tissue engineering, drug release, wound dressing, and cell culture. But the poor mechanical performances of traditional synthetic hydrogels limited their further applications. Double-Network hydrogels (DN gels) have been considered as the most effective way to simultaneously improve the stiffness, strength, and toughness of synthetic gels. In this work, by using the toughing mechanism of DN gels, I prepared a new kind of strong and tough hydrogels with a two-phase composited structure, named as microgel-reinforced hydrogels (MR gels), in which the disperse phase is the microgel with the DN structure and the continuous phase is the soft neutral gel matrix. MR gels solved the disadvantage that conventional DN gels can’t be free-shaped, and widened the application of the concept of DN. Combining the uniaxial tensile test of MR gels and the real-time deformation observation of the internal microgels, the toughening mechanism, fracture process, and stress concentration effect of MR gels have been investigated in details.
