My journey to polymer physics – a random walk?
Prof. Dr. Jiang Zhao
Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Talk Introduction
Once a big lover of chemistry in high school and always dreaming of becoming a chemistry scientist in the future, but admitted to, unfortunately, a physics department instead, how did I manage to adapt to the physics environment and survive? What drove me to end up with a job in a chemistry institute eventually? What is fun to work in the overlapping area of these two? What is the advantage of having background in different fields? In this talk, I would like to share my personal experience of academic education and research career and hope my own experience can be helpful to sophomore students, who may wonder where to go and what to do in their coming years.
About the speaker
Prof. Jiang Zhao got his bachelor degree and master degree in physics from Jilin University and his doctoral degree from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After a few years post-doc researches in Peking University, China and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan, he worked in University of Illinois, USA for 5 years as a research scientist. In 2004, he joined Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Zhao’s research focuses on a number of basic issues in polymer physics at single molecular level, including charged macromolecules, polymers at interfaces, thin films, glass transition and crystallization. He was granted “the 100 Talents Program” of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004, the Distinguished Young Scientist Funding of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2009, and elected to be a Fellow of American Physical Society in 2013.
