报告摘要:
The deep subseafloor is a vast, low-biomass habitat. Although viruses are highly abundant on the surface of the Earth and in recent years many new discoveries have been made about viruses in marine waters, the study of viruses in the deep Earth has been hampered by fundamental technical challenges, leaving many questions regarding their roles unresolved. Using my experiences working with various IODP Projects, I will present on the numerous technical challenges when working on samples from the deep subsurface and also the solutions that have been developed for overcoming these challenges. From virus-mineral interactions to interfering biological nanoparticles to searching for the limits of life, the findings from these studies lead me to conclude that the deep subsurface is far more complex and dynamic than what was once believed.
