At 3 p.m. on May 21, 2018, the 1st IAS Undergraduate Thesis Forum organized by the Institute for Advanced Study(IAS) was held in the No.3 Lecture Hall of Technology Building, Shenzhen University. Prof. Steven F. Chen (Dean of IAS), Prof. Charles C. Han (Dean Advisor of IAS) , Prof. Yueyuan Huang (English Advisor of IAS), Dr. Yang Wei (Assistant Dean of IAS), Prof. Meng Li, Assistant Professor Shan Jiang, Ke Pan attended the forum. Prof. Zexuan Zhu from College of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Xinying Zhang, Dehua Zeng, Yue Lin from the School of Foreign Languages were also invited to the forum. Hundreds of teachers and students of IAS were present.
At the forum, Prof. Chen first affirmed the significance of the forum and briefly reviewed the work of IAS since its establishment. Speaking of the upcoming first graduates, Prof. Chen placed much hope for their future work and life. Combining the characteristics of this forum, he stressed the important role of English in international academic research and exchanges, and expressed strong interest and expectation for the English defense of the 6 outstanding students. At the same time, he welcomed the teachers and students attending the forum and wished the forum a success.

The selection to undergraduate thesis were ranged in good or above good grades.After the collective discussion and recommendation from professor team - the opinion and confirmation of the author - the audit resolution of the Institute, 6 outstanding graduates were selected for the presentation at the forum. They were Wencong Huang(Dynamics of microbial community in the bioreactor for Bisphenol S(BPS) removal), and Kexin Li(The hemostasis and anti-adhesion material used in spinal surgery), Heming Fu(Classification of meromorphic solutions of certain non-linear algebraic ordinary differential equations), Qinxin Wu(A comparative study of two extended methods for option pricing) Siyu Zhang(A study on the enrichment of marine anammox bacteria and their nitrogen removal), and Menglei Liu(The effects of nitrogen and phosphorus supply on the characteristics of surface morphology in marine diatom). Excellent paper reports in fluent English made the 6 students won warm applause from the audience.

After nearly an hour of report, Prof. Chen and Prof. Han issued the certificates of the 1st IAS Undergraduate Thesis Forum Award for the 6 students.

Finally, Prof. Yueyuan Huang made closing remarks. She expressed her affirmation of the forum and the excellent English defense of the 6 students and emphasized the importance of English in scientific research. Prof. Huang also expressed sincere thanks to the leaders, faculty and staff for the work of this forum.

This forum focused on the presentation of the results, professional quality, English level, comprehensive quality of the first graduates of IAS, the development of unyielding and hard-working research spirit, the promoting of the work of the academic papers and a good academic atmosphere in Shenzhen University. As the first forum, it got supports from teachers and students and also benefited them a lot. IAS will continue to hold such forums and make it more professional and standard in the future.
