Zintl and Polar Intermetallic Compounds

Dr.Fei Wang

Polymer & Materials Chemistry, Lund University, Lund, Sweden

About the speaker

Dr. Wang got his PhD in inorganic chemistry from Iowa State University and did his postdoctoral research in Max Planck Institute and Lund University. His research interest is in solid state chemistry, especially the chemistry of energy-related inorganic solid state materials such as thermoelectrics.

Talk Introduction

Zintl and polar intermetallic compounds are compounds between electropositive metals (e.g. alkali, alkaline earth, and rare earth) and electronegative metals/metalloids (e.g. late transition and post transition elements). They possess simultaneously metallic, ionic, and covalent characteristics. The presentation will demonstrate what will happen when metallicity, covalency, and ionicity coincide and interplay with each other.

Besides, the bonding between the “anionic” electronegative metals/metalloids is also intriguing. The well-known electron counting rules, such as the octet rule and the Wade-Mingo's rules, fail frequently in rationalizing the bonding in Zintl and polar intermetallic compounds. The presentation will mention a few examples and illustrate the causes.

Through the discussions of Zintl and polar intermetallics, it will also be demonstrated that, to a large degree, solids can be studied analogously to simple molecules.
