Variable Metal Concentrations in Marine Bivalves:

Why and So?

Dr. Pan Ke
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

About the speaker

Dr. Pan got his PhD degree from the Department of Biology in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2009. Now he is a Research Assistant Professor and works in the Coastal Marine Laboratory of HKUST. His research interests are metal ecotoxicology and marine biology.

Talk Introduction

Bivalves are one of the most diverse organisms in aquatic environments. They not only contribute to the function of marine ecosystems, but also act as important aquaculture species for human consumption. The increasing pressure of metal contamination in the coastal waters of China has dramatically affected the metal levels in marine bivalves. Metal concentrations in marine bivalves vary greatly in field environments. However, such variability cannot be fully explained by anthropogenic pollution. Understanding the variable metal concentrations requires our knowledge on the water quality as well as bivalve physiology. Metal biokinetics play significantly roles in controlling the bivalve metal concentrations. But complex field environments also affect bivalves to build up their metal levels. This talk will map out the factors that contribute to the variable metal concentrations in marine bivalves.
