Interfacial interactions from drop-substrate, to particle-fluid, to cell-matrix

Dr. Xinpeng Xu

Department of Materials and Interfaces, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel

About the Speaker

Dr. Xinpeng Xu received B.S. in physics (2008) from Wuhan University and Ph.D. in Nano Science and Technology (2012) from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Now he is a postdoctor in Weizmann Institute of Science. His research applies the theoretical concepts of condensed matter physics and non-equilibrium statistical thermodynamics to the understanding of soft matter and biomaterials.

Talk Introduction

Understanding the structure and dynamics of interfaces in soft matter materials is important for both science and practical applications including coatings, dispersants, medicines and biomaterials. Soft materials are usually dispersions where the physics centers on the properties of internal quasi-2D interfaces embedded in the 3D world. Here I will present theoretical models I have developed from drop-substrate, particle-fluid, and to cell-matrix. These models are being used to deepen our understanding of these systems. Focus will be placed on the mechanical interactions between living cells and their extracellular matrix (ECM). Cells can actively adhere to ECM and probe its mechanical properties by applying contractile forces. I will show that the nonlinear elasticity of biogels can significantly increase the transmission range of cellular forces to tens of cell diameters. Such long-range force transmission is vital for the matrix-mediated communications between cells and for cells to sense mechanical signals in distance.
