Materials patterning at the liquid-solid interface

Dr. Shern-long Lee

National Taiwan University, NTU

About the Speaker

Dr. Shern-Long Lee received his PhD degree from the department of chemistry at NTU in 2009. He worked as a postdoctoral research associate at NTU 2009-2012 and at K.U. Leuven, Belgium 2012-2015, respectively. He is currently working at NTU as a research assistant professor. His research interests range from materials chemistry, surface science, electrochemistry, nanotechnology to microscopic techniques.

Talk Information

The control of morphology of materials is crucial for their mechanical and device performance. My research mainly focuses on methodological development for precise fabrication of highly ordered 2D nanostructures as well as structural/electrical analysis of materials properties by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). We have developed a solution-based processing approach for molecular patterning on solid surfaces. This approach is quite useful for the field of surface materials chemistry. For example, this approach enables DNA-like polymeric materials to pack together and constitute a stable 2D thin film allowing high-resolution STM visualizations. This approach is also able to align functional materials into well-ordered 3D architectures. Such control can tailor materials properties (e.g., promoting electron transfer efficiency). Furthermore, this approach shows significant impacts on the field of molecular crystal engineering. Moreover, this method can also work as a separation technique because it allows rapid screening and separation of molecular polymorphs on a surface.
