Microbial fuel cells for pollutant removal and energy recovery from wastewater

Dr. LijuanZhang

Department of Chemistry, National University of Singapore

About the Speaker

Dr. Lijuan Zhang obtained a PhD degree in environmental chemistry from the Department of Chemistry, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2017. Co-enrolled under Singapore-Peking-Oxford research and enterprise program at the NUS Environmental Research Institute from 2012 to 2016.His interest focus on applied biological fuel cells for pollutant removal and renewable energy generation from wastewater.

Talk Information

Energy crisis and water pollution are issues of considerable concerns today. In seeking a balance between protection of environment and conservation of energy, the microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been developed. The wide application in contaminants elimination and resources recovery makes MFC technology a competitive tool in environmental and energy engineering. However, majority of experiments were conducted using synthetic wastewater in the laboratory. Development of an economical MFCto scale up the practical applicationis still under investigation. In this study, various MFC-based technologies have been developed for pollutant removal, electricity generation, toxicity sensing, CO2 reduction and water quality monitoring as well as resources (metallic elements and valuable chemicals) recovery from real wastewater.Systematic studies on MFC performance under various operating conditions will provide valuable information for practical implementation.
