Structure and Kinetic Study of Polyelectrolyte Complex Coacervate

Dr. Xiaoqing Liu

Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal-CNRS, Bordeaux

About the Speaker

Dr. Xiaoqing Liu graduated from Zhejiang University in 2009. She got her Ph.D. in polymer chemistry and physics from Peking University in 2014. From 2015 to 2017, she was a postdoc working in two labs of CNRS and University of Bordeaux. Her research interests involve polymer physics and functional polymeric materials.

Talk Information

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are formed by association of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) in aqueous solutions. The formation process of PECs involves two distinct stages: the generation of primary PECs and their aggregation/reorganization into larger structures through either a liquid-solid (precipitation) or a liquid-liquid (coacervation) phase transition. Numerous works have been dedicated to the control of the morphology and properties of PECs under various formulation conditions. Much less studies have reported the kinetic aspects of PECs. This talk will focus on a synthetic model system forming coacervate. Light and neutron scattering techniques are used to investigate the structure of complexes and especially to evidence the formation of soluble complexes in defined conditions. The stopped-flow mixing technique with scattering technique shows its potential to study the kinetics of complexation and coacervation at early stage. PECs are also formulated through desalting transition, showing the equilibrium state of the coacervate.
