Energies of Adsorbed Catalytic Intermediates on Transition Metal Surfaces

Dr. Wei Zhao

Research Associate, University of Washington

About the Speaker

Dr. Wei Zhao earned his Ph.D. degree in 2013 in physical chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. After that, he worked at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for one year. Since May 2015, he has been working at the University of Washington as a research associate. He currently focuses on the heterogeneous catalysis and energetics related studies. He has produced highly regarded journal articles in flagship publications of the discipline.

Talk Information

The most common intermediates, i.e., -OH, -OCH3, -OOCH and -CH3, are evoked in many catalytic reactions, and their energies on metal and metal oxide provide the energetics of many elementary steps that occur during energy-related and environmental catalysis. Here, I will present the calorimetric measurements of the energies of -OH, -OOCH and -CH3 adsorbed on Ni(111), and also the enthalpies of H2O and HCOOH dissociatively adsorbed on NiO(111). Besides the crucial importance of these measured energies for understanding related catalytic relations, they also provide important experimental benchmarks that can be used to improve the accuracy of the related quantum mechanical calculations. An extensive comparison of these energies on Ni(111) to calorimetric measurements on Pt(111) provides the insight into the catalytic properties and reaction efficiency for these two metals.
