Strategic Composition Design of Large-capacity Anodes for Li-ion Batteries

About the Speaker
Dr. Wenwu Li obtained his Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. During 2018 to 2019, he visited the Georgia Institute of Technology. His primary research interests focus on the strategic design of the large-capacity anode materials for rechargeable batteries. He has published 17 first-author high-impact research articles including Energy and Environmental Science (2), Adv. Funct. Mater., Nano Energy (2).  

  

Talk Introduction
Battery technology is of great importance in our daily life. However, the current graphite anode is dramatically restricted by its low capacity of 372 mA h g-1 and poor rate performance. This talk will present the composition design strategies of large-capacity anodes with high initial Coulombic Efficiency & high-rate performance, which mainly covers the following two parts.
1) When introduced P into Ge, the initial diamond-like crystal structure of Ge was transformed into a graphite-like layered structure which endows metallic conductivity. The as-designed binary Li-reactive large capacity Ge-P series compounds have highly reversible crystal structure during cycling enabled by low formation energy, thus achieving long-term cycling stability, high initial Coulombic Efficiency and high-rate performance.
2) When co-introduced Zn(Cu) and P into Si, the as-designed cation-disordered Zn(Cu)–Si–P family materials demonstrate better Li-storage performance than the cation-ordered ZnSiP2 phase due largely to faster electronic and ionic conductivity and better tolerance to volume change during cycling, as confirmed by DFT calculations and experimental measurements. Furthermore, the related extensions are also discussed.
