Biomaterials and Additive Manufacturing of Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications
Speaker Dr. Dongxu Ke
Research Fellow, Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine

About the Speaker
Dr. Ke received his M.S. degree in Materials Science & Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Washington State University. After that, he worked at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine for two years. His research focuses include tricalcium phosphate scaffolds, plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite coating and bioprinted constructs for tissue engineering applications.

Talk Introduction
My goal is to develop strategies to manufacture biomaterials based implants for tissue engineering applications. The first approach is to develop porous tricalcium phosphate scaffolds for treating minor bone injuries. Our scaffolds can enhance new bone formation and degrade to harmless substances, which avoids the secondary surgery to remove scaffolds. The second approach is to develop hydroxyapatite coated titanium implants for load bearing orthopedic applications. Metallic implants usually have excellent mechanical properties which are appropriate for load bearing orthopedic applications, however, they lack biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. Another layer of strongly bonded hydroxyapatite coating with osteoinductivity and antibacterial property can perfectly address the challenge. The last approach is to manufacture human-sized implants through bioprinting for the development of next generation organ transplants. This approach can address the two major problems of current organ transplantation: limited donors and transplant rejection, which is the future of regenerative medicine.
