Talk Introduction
Photonic crystals are periodic optical nanostructures that can be used to affect the motion of photons in a similar way the periodicity of a semiconductor crystal affects the motion of electrons. Photonic crystals can find many applications in optical fibers, filters, switches, sensing, energy and environment, etc. In this talk, by using self-assembly methods, I fabricated a variety of high-quality three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals, which were used as platforms for the fabrication of photonic crystal sensors. The photonic crystal sensing technology developed here are easily and inexpensively fabricated to sense a wide variety of analytes, including toxins, pathogens, glucose, metal ions, surfactants and volatile organic compounds. These sensor motifs show very bright diffraction readouts, which may enable visual biological and chemical agents detection in applications such as food safety, healthcare, and chemical threat monitoring.
