About the Speaker
Dr. Luo works in KU Leuven as a visiting professor and a doctoral supervisor. He received his PhD degree from KU Leuven in 2012. His research focuses on fuel cells. He is the PI or co-PI of 6 national research projects. He authored 34 SCI-indexed papers and proposed the concept of protic organic ionic plastic crystals in the literature. The awards he received include 2012 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Student Abroad and Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO).
Talk Introduction
High temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) operating between 100 °C and 200 °C are desirable because they offer significant benefits, such as improved electrode kinetics, simpler water and heat management, and better tolerance to fuel impurities, leading to higher overall system efficiencies. However, state-of-the-art high temperature PEMFCs suffer from leakage problems associated with liquid electrolytes, such as H3PO4 and protic ionic liquids.
Recently, protic organic ionic plastic crystals (POIPCs), which are solid protic organic salts formed by proton transfer from a Brønsted acid to a Brønsted base, have been found to be unique proton conductors due to their superior properties such as intrinsic protonic conductivity, non-flammability, negligible vapor pressure, plasticity, high thermal stability, and wide electrochemical window, are promising for electrochemical devices. In this talk, I will present our recent work on some POIPCs as novel, fast proton conductors for the realization of all-solid-state high temperature PEMFCs.
