On the afternoon of December 6th, Prof. Yueyuan Huang, Teacher Yue Lin and Teacher Dehua Zeng from English Teaching Team of IAS, visited South China University of Technology for a teaching exchange activity, which was titled “New Model of College English for Science: the Balance between General English and Academic English”.      

The main current problem in the reform of College English teaching is how to incorporate general English and academic English into the College English courses. The exchange meeting would introduce a new college English curriculum and present its goal that students who take the curriculum could write the undergraduate thesis in English. This program was established in September 2014 adopted by the Innovation Class in Science and Engineering (ICSE) of Shenzhen University, and its first students graduated in June 2018 and successfully completed their English papers.

In this meeting, Prof. Huang firstly introduced the main content of the curriculum, including the course materials and the structure of academic texts and speeches, and also shared the course materials written by herself with the teachers present.

In the following part, Teacher Lin explained the teaching methods by the example of discussing teaching method and then Teacher Zeng presented by words based on student feedback.

Finally, Prof. Huang explained how to prepare and guide the first students to write undergraduate thesis in English. After that, a heated discussion started among the teachers from South China University of Technology and the English Teaching Team of IAS.

Such exchange meeting would not only show the solid basic skills and teaching characteristics of English Teaching Team of IAS, but also expand the influence and the popularity of IAS.
